Fly-In Prangins 2019

On the 24th August, La Côte Airport opened its doors for the 6th edition of the "fly-in CASG"; a free event where about 4000 visitors from mostly Switzerland, meet up to watch a load of planes flyby or even pay for a short flight experience in an aircraft over the lake (Leman). I didn't have anything planned that day so a friend and I decided to travel to the air show and meet some of our spotter friends at the event.

Our journey started in Plan-Les-Ouates, a municipality within the canton of Geneva in Switzerland. We took a tram to the main train station in Geneva (Cornavin). Luckily we decided to book the ticket the day before on sbb.ch, which granted us not only unlimited public transport in Geneva for the day, but also a return train ticket from Geneva to Nyon. In addition to this, the ticket granted us a day's unlimited travel on public transport in Nyon. Purchasing this ticket makes travelling on public transport much simpler, as there is no need to keep on buying individual tickets just to get around. The ticket only cost 17,70CHF (equivalent to £14.69 at the current exchange rate as of the 27th August 2019). If you wish to attend this event next year and travel on public transport, I would suggest taking the train to Nyon or Gland. From there, take a bus! These buses can take you close to the event, but bear in mind you will still have to walk a good 10 minutes to the air show. If you wish to travel by car to the event, there's a big outdoor car park on a field, however, bear in mind it does NOT include any parking spots in the shade! We arrived at the event a little before 11, just in time to see the Bronco OV-10 take flight!

After the stunning Bronco display, the hunger pangs struck even though it was only 11:30am.
The queue for food already stretched quite far at 11:30am, which also contributed to my decision of eating early, in order to avoid spending hours in a queue.

There were few food options at the event: chips, sausage with bread, ice cream and hot and cold beverages. The prices were quite reasonable considering the location of the event (canton of Vaud in Switzerland). You could purchase a portion of chips or a sausage for 5CHF (£4.15), drink prices started at 3CHF for a bottle of water or 4CHF for a soft drink or a coffee. Ice cream was charged at a price of 3.50CHF a scoop, no matter how many scoops you wanted. Overall, a good enough selection for, me but no options for anyone with a special diet.

1pm, when most of us had finished eating, a journalist called "Laura Lose" from the newspaper lacote.ch, came over to interview us. The questions were all in relation to spotting and the air show and we really enjoyed giving our opinion! Soon after, some of the older spotters came over and answered questions about all the places they had travelled to, in order to take photos of particular aircrafts!

For those eager to experience the thrill of a helicopter ride, a 6-minute flight was available at the reasonable price of 50CHF! Something for a real enthusiast.

Final thoughts:

Overall, I found the whole air show a thoroughly enjoyable event. First of all, it is a free event! Secondly, the range of aircraft present was quite extensive and full of exciting aircraft, ranging from a Super Puma, all the way to the Global 5000.
Although the food was reasonable, the choice was quite limited, so a good idea would be to bring a few snacks or to take a picnic. Furthermore, I would have liked to have seen more aircraft between 12 and 2pm and not such a long break for lunch. A long lunch is something you have to come in terms with if in Switzerland or France!
Would I go again? Of course! It's different to spotting planes at Geneva airport and it's much more fun with many more people around, live commentary...

Thanks for reading this post! Here are a few more photos of other aircraft at the air show :
